How to find a flatmate

Most people do this backwards. They find a room first, then discover three weeks later that their flatmate is a 2 AM person and they are a 6 AM person. Bunkd inverts it — you see the person before you see the lease.

  1. Sign up in about a minute. Phone number, OTP, a photo, your area. No essay questions.
  2. Set your lifestyle. Sleep schedule, cleanliness, social battery, guest policy, food preference, and the one dealbreaker you genuinely can't live with.
  3. Swipe. Right on people you'd share a kitchen with, left to skip. Cards show age, occupation, area, budget, lifestyle tags and room photos where there's a room going.
  4. Match and chat. When two people both swipe right, chat unlocks inside the app. Your number stays private unless you hand it over.
  5. Meet before you commit. Coffee first, flat second. See the safety guide for what to check on a first meet.

Are you a Hunter or a Host?

Hunter

You need a room, or you need someone to find one with. You'll see Hosts with rooms going, and — in Squad Mode — other Hunters to team up with.

Host

You have a spare room in your flat and you'd rather choose who fills it than let a broker decide. You'll see Hunters who fit how your household actually runs. List your room free →

Squad Mode — find people before you find a flat

A 2BHK or 3BHK is almost always cheaper per person than a single room, but you need people first. Squad Mode lets Hunters see other Hunters, so you can pool budgets with one or two people whose lifestyle actually fits yours and then go hunting as a group. It's the difference between paying ₹18,000 alone and ₹11,000 each in a better flat.

What a room in a shared flat costs

These are indicative ranges drawn from listings and local rents, not a live index — always confirm the number with the host before you commit. Splitting rent with someone? Use the rent split calculator to divide it fairly when rooms aren't the same size.

Flatshare, PG or hostel?

A flatshare gives you your own room, a kitchen, no curfew and no warden — you pick the people and you split the bills. A PG bundles meals and cleaning, costs less to start, and comes with house rules and often a gate timing. A hostel is cheapest and most restrictive, and usually tied to an institution.

If you want your own space and control over who you live with, flatshare wins. If you want zero admin and don't mind rules, PG wins. We wrote the honest head-to-head in PG vs flatshare.

Common questions

Is Bunkd free?

Yes. Signing up, swiping, matching and chatting are free. There is no brokerage and no listing fee for hosts.

How is this different from a broker or a Facebook group?

Brokers charge a month's rent and match you to a room, not a person. Facebook and WhatsApp groups are unverified and unsorted. Bunkd verifies every profile by phone and matches on lifestyle compatibility, so the person is the starting point rather than an afterthought.

Are profiles verified?

Every account is phone-verified, which prevents duplicate and throwaway profiles. You can block anyone instantly — they disappear from your feed and your matches — and report fake profiles, scams or harassment. Every report gets reviewed and reports stay anonymous.

Can I find a flatmate before I have a flat?

Yes — that's Squad Mode. Team up with one or two people first, pool your budgets, then look for a 2BHK or 3BHK together.

Which cities is Bunkd active in?

Bunkd works anywhere in India, but activity is densest in the cities listed above. Dehradun, Haldwani and Nainital are the most active right now; the metros are growing fastest.

Does Bunkd handle rent or agreements?

No. We get the right two people into the same coffee shop. Rent, deposits and the agreement stay between you, your flatmate and the landlord.
