Every property site in India tells you what a whole flat costs. Almost nobody tells you what a room in a shared flat costs — which is what most people under thirty are actually renting. This is our attempt at that number, area by area.

Mumbai is roughly five times Haldwani for the same thing. That gap is bigger than the salary gap between those cities, which is why so many people end up sharing a room rather than renting one.

Deposits: the number that actually stops people
Rent gets quoted. Deposits get discovered late, and they are the single biggest reason a move falls through.

Note the last column includes the first month's rent. Moving to Mumbai on a ₹15,000 room needs over a lakh in hand before you've bought a mattress — which is why joining an existing flatshare, where the deposit is usually far smaller, is the practical route into that city.
What a room actually costs once you add everything up
Rent is roughly 55 to 65 percent of what living somewhere costs. Here's the realistic all-in monthly figure for one person sharing.

How these numbers were put together
Being straight about this matters, because plenty of "rent indices" are marketing dressed as data.
- These are indicative ranges compiled from listing prices, local market rates and what people actually report paying — not a live feed off Bunkd's own inventory.
- They cover a private room in a shared flat, unfurnished to semi-furnished, before deposit and before maintenance.
- The range in each row runs from the cheapest pocket of that area to the priciest, which in somewhere like Andheri is a genuinely wide spread.
- They will be wrong for individual flats. A ground-floor room with no window and a top-floor room with a balcony are not the same product at the same price.
- As Bunkd's own listing density grows, this page moves to real numbers from real listings. That's the plan, and we'd rather say so than pretend it's already happened.

Common questions
How much does a room in a shared flat cost in India?
Between about ₹3,000 a month in Haldwani and ₹42,000 in Bandra. The realistic middle for a metro is ₹8,000 to ₹18,000 for a private room, or ₹5,000 to ₹11,000 if you share a room.
Which is the cheapest metro to share a flat in?
Hyderabad, consistently. Kukatpally and Miyapur start around ₹6,000 for a private room and the deposits are two to three months rather than Mumbai's five to six.
Why is a shared room so much cheaper?
Because you're splitting one room's rent between two people. It roughly halves your cost and is very common among students and first-jobbers, particularly in Marathahalli, BTM Layout, Ameerpet and Wakad.

No, and we won't pretend otherwise. They're indicative ranges compiled from listings and local rates. Real listing-derived numbers come as Bunkd's inventory grows.
