Flatmates & Roommates in HSR Layout, Bengaluru

HSR Layout is the sector-planned, slightly-calmer answer to Koramangala, and it has quietly become the default for people who work along the Outer Ring Road but do not want to live on it. The grid layout means addresses actually make sense here, which is rarer in Bengaluru than it should be.

Who lives here

Software engineers working the ORR corridor and the Sarjapur belt, plus a large startup population that spilled over from Koramangala when rents there climbed.

Who works here. The Outer Ring Road tech corridor — Ecospace, Cessna Business Park, Embassy TechVillage — plus the Sarjapur Road offices and the Koramangala startup belt next door.

Where to live, area by area

Rents below are indicative ranges for a private room in a shared flat, before deposit. Confirm the number with the person before you commit to anything.

Sector 1 and 2

Closest to Koramangala and Agara. Best connected, most cafes, priciest end of HSR.

₹14,000 – ₹23,000 / month for a private room

Sector 3 and 4

The residential core. Good apartment stock, quiet streets, the largest share of available rooms.

₹12,000 – ₹20,000 / month for a private room

Sector 6 and 7

Toward Bommanahalli and the Hosur Road side. Cheaper, well placed for Electronic City commutes.

₹10,000 – ₹16,000 / month for a private room

Somasundarapalya and Parangi Palya

The affordable pockets inside HSR. Denser, older, and a substantial saving while staying in the layout.

₹8,000 – ₹13,000 / month for a private room

How long it actually takes to get places

DestinationTypical time
Outer Ring Road / Bellandur20–35 min, worse after 6pm
Koramangala10–20 min
Electronic City30–45 min via Hosur Road
Whitefield50–70 min — not a daily commute

What it actually costs per month in HSR Layout

Rent is the number people compare, and it is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the realistic all-in figure for one person sharing a flat in HSR Layout.

What you payTypical range
Room rent (private, shared flat)₹8,000 – ₹23,000
Deposit (one-off)₹40,000 – ₹1,20,000 (3–6 months)
Maintenance & utilities₹2,500 – ₹4,000
Food₹7,000 – ₹10,000
Local transport₹1,500 – ₹3,000 (ORR fuel or cab)
Realistic monthly total₹19,000 – ₹38,000

The deposit is what catches people out in Bengaluru — ten months was the old norm and while most areas have settled to three to six, some landlords still ask for more. Read the security deposit guide before you hand anything over, and get the refund terms written on the receipt.

Flatmate, roommate or PG — which one do you actually want?

The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing, which matters when you are searching.

Bunkd covers all three. You set whether you want your own room or are happy sharing one, and the matching works the same way either direction. If a PG is what you are after, the honest PG versus flatshare comparison is worth five minutes before you sign.

When to look

HSR runs on the tech hiring cycle. Stock is reasonably steady with tighter stretches in January to March and again around July. A lot of HSR sharing is three or four engineers in a 3BHK, which means rooms open one at a time whenever someone changes city or company.

What to check before you pay anything

Finding the person, not just the room

Most flatshares fail on lifestyle, not on rent. Bunkd asks the things that actually decide whether living together works — sleep schedule, cleanliness, social battery, guest policy, food preference and your one real dealbreaker — and matches on those. You swipe through people, match when it is mutual, and chat inside the app before anyone shares a phone number.

If you have not found a flat yet, Squad Mode lets you match with other people searching in HSR Layout so you can pool budgets and take a 2BHK or 3BHK together. Splitting a bigger flat is almost always cheaper per person than renting a single room alone — the rent split calculator works out a fair division when the rooms are not the same size.

Common questions

How much is a room in a shared flat in HSR Layout?

A private room runs roughly ₹8,000 to ₹23,000 a month. Somasundarapalya and Parangi Palya are the cheapest, Sectors 1 and 2 the priciest. A shared room is usually ₹6,000 to ₹10,000.

Is HSR good for ORR jobs?

It is one of the two best options along with Bellandur. Twenty to thirty-five minutes to Ecospace and Embassy TechVillage, and a much better place to live than the ORR itself.

HSR or Koramangala?

HSR is quieter, newer, better laid out and a bit cheaper. Koramangala is livelier and walkable. Engineers tend to pick HSR, people who go out a lot pick Koramangala.

Can I find a flatmate before I have a flat?

Yes. Squad Mode is built for it — most HSR flatshares are three or four people in a 3BHK, and forming that group first gets you a far better flat than joining one late.

Does Bunkd charge anything?

No fee and no brokerage, for either side.
