PG & Rooms Near Fergusson College, FC Road
Updated 30 Sep 2026
Fergusson College is a walled campus on Fergusson College Road, a few hundred metres from Deccan Gymkhana, and it draws a mix of Pune residents and out-of-town students in the BA, BSc and BCom streams, plus the postgraduate programmes. The college hostels cover only a fraction of the intake, so a large number of students go looking for a bed in the neighbouring lanes. Those lanes are old, central and expensive for what you get: the trade-off is that you can walk to class, to the library and to most of the study cafes without spending a rupee on fuel.
Who lives here
Fergusson undergraduates and postgraduates who missed a hostel seat, plus students from Modern College, Garware College and the Deccan coaching circuit who rent in the same lanes.
Campuses in this belt. Fergusson College, Garware College of Commerce, Modern College (Shivajinagar), Symbiosis campuses at Model Colony, SPPU Ganeshkhind a short ride to the northwest, and the Deccan competitive-exam coaching cluster on Apte Road and Law College Road.
Where to live, area by area
Rents below are indicative ranges for a private room in a shared flat, before deposit. Confirm the number with the person before you commit to anything.
The premium end. Old apartment blocks and wadas converted into PGs, with a two to eight minute walk to the main gate. Rooms are small and landlords know exactly what proximity is worth, so this is where you pay the most per square foot in the whole city for a student room.
₹10,000 – ₹18,000 / month for a private room
Slightly southeast of the campus, ten minutes on foot. Mixed stock: a few good shared flats above shops, plenty of dated PGs. Noisy in the evening because of the food street traffic, quiet after 11pm.
₹9,000 – ₹16,000 / month for a private room
Ten to fifteen minutes toward the Shivajinagar bus and metro area. More flats available, better bargaining room, and easier to reach the railway station.
₹8,000 – ₹15,000 / month for a private room
West of Deccan, fifteen minutes by two-wheeler. Quieter residential streets, several girls-only PGs, and the option of a flat if you are three or four sharing.
₹9,000 – ₹17,000 / month for a private room
How long it actually takes to get places
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Fergusson College main gate | 2–8 min walk from FC Road lanes; 10–15 min from Deccan and Shivajinagar |
| Deccan Gymkhana metro station (Line 2) | 10–15 min walk; check the nearest station entrance before you sign |
| Pune railway station | 20–30 min by auto; longer at peak on Jangli Maharaj Road |
| SPPU (Ganeshkhind) | 20–30 min by bus or bike; the University Road stretch jams in the evening |
What it actually costs per month in Fergusson College
Rent is the number people compare, and it is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the realistic all-in figure for one person sharing a flat in Fergusson College.
| What you pay | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Room rent (private, shared flat) | ₹8,000 – ₹18,000 |
| Deposit (one-off) | ₹16,000 – ₹36,000 (older FC Road landlords often want 2–3 months) |
| Maintenance & utilities | ₹1,200 – ₹2,500 |
| Food | included in most PGs; ₹5,500 – ₹8,500 if self-catering |
| Local transport | ₹0 – ₹800 (most students walk) |
| Realistic monthly total | ₹14,000 – ₹28,000 |
The deposit is the part that catches people out — Pune commonly asks two months up front and some landlords ask more. Read the security deposit guide before you hand anything over, and get the refund terms written on the receipt.
Flatmate, roommate or PG — which one do you actually want?
The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing, which matters when you are searching.
- A flatmate shares the flat but has their own room. You split rent and bills, cook or order separately, and keep your own space. This is what most working professionals in Fergusson College mean when they say flatmate.
- A roommate shares the room itself. Cheapest option by a wide margin — often 40 to 50 percent less than a private room — and common among students and first-jobbers who are saving hard.
- A PG gives you a bed with meals and cleaning handled, plus house rules and often a gate timing. Simpler to start, less freedom, and once you split a flat three ways the cost difference usually disappears.
Bunkd covers all three. You set whether you want your own room or are happy sharing one, and the matching works the same way either direction. If a PG is what you are after, the honest PG versus flatshare comparison is worth five minutes before you sign.
When to look
Fergusson runs on the standard Maharashtra degree calendar. Class XII results come out in May and most admissions are confirmed between June and August, with classes beginning in July or August. FC Road stock disappears in the first fortnight after the merit lists, because so many students want to walk. The one exception is mid-year: some students drop out of PGs in December, and January is when a decent room occasionally becomes available at short notice.
What to check before you pay anything
- Ask who owns the building and whether the PG is licensed by the society. Many older FC Road blocks quietly forbid commercial letting.
- Check for noise at the hour you actually study. Rooms facing FC Road itself get traffic and street-food noise until late.
- Confirm curfew rules for girls in writing. Old-city PGs are the strictest and some restrict guests entirely.
- Ask about water. Several older buildings on Bhandarkar Road get tanker water for part of the week.
- Find out whether the rent includes electricity. In small rooms with an AC fitted, the bill can add ₹1,500 in summer.
Finding the person, not just the room
Most flatshares fail on lifestyle, not on rent. Bunkd asks the things that actually decide whether living together works — sleep schedule, cleanliness, social battery, guest policy, food preference and your one real dealbreaker — and matches on those. You swipe through people, match when it is mutual, and chat inside the app before anyone shares a phone number.
If you have not found a flat yet, Squad Mode lets you match with other people searching in Fergusson College so you can pool budgets and take a 2BHK or 3BHK together. Splitting a bigger flat is almost always cheaper per person than renting a single room alone — the rent split calculator works out a fair division when the rooms are not the same size.

Common questions
How much is a PG near Fergusson College?
A PG bed with meals is usually ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 a month, and single rooms in the FC Road and Model Colony lanes reach ₹18,000. The college hostel is much cheaper but limited, so it is worth applying for one before you look at PGs.
Is there a girls PG near Fergusson College?
Yes, there are several, mostly around Deccan, Erandwane and Law College Road. They tend to have strict entry cut-offs, often 9:30 to 10pm, and some require a guardian contact. Ask for the house rules in writing and visit in daylight and after dark.
Should I live on FC Road itself?
Only if walking to class matters more than money or space. It is the most expensive belt and the noisiest. Two lanes further toward Shivajinagar or Erandwane you can save a couple of thousand a month for a ten-minute walk.
Can I find a flatmate before joining?
Yes. Squad Mode lets you match with other Fergusson and Deccan students, then take a 2BHK together in Shivajinagar or Erandwane. Three people sharing is usually cheaper per head than a PG bed.
Does Bunkd charge students?
No. It is free and there is no brokerage.
