Flatmate, roommate or PG — which one do you actually want?
The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing, which matters when you are searching.
- A flatmate shares the flat but has their own room. You split rent and bills, cook or order separately, and keep your own space. This is what most working professionals in COEP mean when they say flatmate.

COEP's off-campus market is small, so it clears fast. Admission confirmations land in June and July and the Wellesley Road and Shivajinagar lanes are effectively gone within a fortnight. - Old-city buildings often have genuinely small rooms. See it in person or on video before committing.
- Ask about parking if you have a two-wheeler — in Sadashiv Peth and Narayan Peth it is scarce.
- Confirm water timings; several older Shivajinagar buildings supply on a fixed schedule.
- Check the deposit terms carefully. Pune deposits vary widely and old-city landlords tend to ask for more.
- Ask whether the room is available for the full academic year or only until a returning tenant comes back.
