Flatmates & Roommates in Shivajinagar, Pune
Updated 30 Sep 2026
Shivajinagar is Pune's transport and administrative centre: the main ST bus stand, the district courts, a railway station, PMPML's busiest hub and a Metro Line 1 station all sit within a kilometre of each other. For flatmates that means something unusual for Pune. You can live here without a vehicle, reach almost any part of the city on public transport and walk to a college or office. Rents are the highest in this batch and space is small, so most rooms are in older buildings, and many of the best-known addresses are near Fergusson College and FC Road, where students have been renting for generations.
Who lives here
Students of Fergusson, COEP and other central colleges, competitive-exam aspirants, young professionals in the Deccan and Camp belts who want to avoid owning a vehicle, and a strong postgraduate crowd.
Campuses and institutions. Fergusson College, COEP Technological University, the Symbiosis colleges in the Model Colony and Senapati Bapat Road belt, the Agriculture College campus, Pune district courts, the ST bus stand and Shivajinagar Metro station.
Where to live, area by area
Rents below are indicative ranges for a private room in a shared flat, before deposit. Confirm the number with the person before you commit to anything.
The student heartland, with Fergusson College, the cafes and the bookshops. Shared rooms and PGs in old wadas and apartment blocks. Very convenient and never quiet, and the best rooms are passed along by seniors before any listing.
₹8,000 – ₹18,000 / month for a private room
Quieter residential streets on the hill side, with mature trees and larger flats. Popular with working professionals and postgraduate students. Rooms here tend to cost the most and be the most stable.
₹9,000 – ₹20,000 / month for a private room
Toward the university and the Agriculture College campus. Easier for SPPU students than those at Fergusson, and less congested than FC Road. A mix of cooperative societies and newer blocks.
₹8,000 – ₹17,000 / month for a private room
Around the railway station and bus stand. Practical for people who travel out of Pune often, cheaper per bed than the college lanes, and the busiest and loudest part of the area.
₹7,500 – ₹14,000 / month for a private room
How long it actually takes to get places
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Fergusson College / FC Road | Walkable, 5–15 min on foot or by bike |
| Deccan / COEP | 10–20 min by road; COEP is on the river side, close enough to walk from parts of Shivajinagar |
| Swargate (Metro Line 1) | 15–20 min by Metro from Shivajinagar station, with the caveat that you need to reach the station first |
| Hinjewadi | 60–90 min by road; Metro Line 3 to Hinjewadi is opening in phases and Shivajinagar station is not yet operating, so do not plan around it |
What it actually costs per month in Shivajinagar
Rent is the number people compare, and it is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the realistic all-in figure for one person sharing a flat in Shivajinagar.
| What you pay | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Room rent (private, shared flat) | ₹7,500 – ₹20,000 |
| Deposit (one-off) | ₹15,000 – ₹40,000 |
| Maintenance & utilities | ₹1,500 – ₹3,500 |
| Food | ₹5,500 – ₹9,000 |
| Local transport | ₹300 – ₹1,200 (walk, bus or Metro Line 1) |
| Realistic monthly total | ₹15,000 – ₹33,000 |
The deposit is the part that catches people out — Pune commonly asks two months up front and some landlords ask more. Read the security deposit guide before you hand anything over, and get the refund terms written on the receipt.
Flatmate, roommate or PG — which one do you actually want?
The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing, which matters when you are searching.
- A flatmate shares the flat but has their own room. You split rent and bills, cook or order separately, and keep your own space. This is what most working professionals in Shivajinagar mean when they say flatmate.
- A roommate shares the room itself. Cheapest option by a wide margin — often 40 to 50 percent less than a private room — and common among students and first-jobbers who are saving hard.
- A PG gives you a bed with meals and cleaning handled, plus house rules and often a gate timing. Simpler to start, less freedom, and once you split a flat three ways the cost difference usually disappears.
Bunkd covers all three. You set whether you want your own room or are happy sharing one, and the matching works the same way either direction. If a PG is what you are after, the honest PG versus flatshare comparison is worth five minutes before you sign.
When to look
Shivajinagar is driven by the college year and by competitive-exam batches. June and July are the peak, as new undergraduates and postgraduates arrive, and rooms in FC Road wadas are often fixed by April through seniors. Metro access has raised demand from office workers, who tend to appear in January to March. The area is so central that vacancies rarely last more than a week. If a room is listed and fits, ask about it the same day.
What to check before you pay anything
- Ask whether the building is a wada or a cooperative society. Wadas can be atmospheric and cheap, and they can also have shared bathrooms and unreliable plumbing.
- Check the walking route at night. FC Road is busy, but some of the lanes behind it are not.
- Read the noise picture. FC Road cafes, the bus stand and the station all generate sound late into the evening.
- Confirm parking. Many central buildings have none, and street parking is enforced and towed.
- Ask whether the building is subject to a rent-control tenancy. Some old central properties are under older rules, and landlords resist changes.
Finding the person, not just the room
Most flatshares fail on lifestyle, not on rent. Bunkd asks the things that actually decide whether living together works — sleep schedule, cleanliness, social battery, guest policy, food preference and your one real dealbreaker — and matches on those. You swipe through people, match when it is mutual, and chat inside the app before anyone shares a phone number.
If you have not found a flat yet, Squad Mode lets you match with other people searching in Shivajinagar so you can pool budgets and take a 2BHK or 3BHK together. Splitting a bigger flat is almost always cheaper per person than renting a single room alone — the rent split calculator works out a fair division when the rooms are not the same size.

Common questions
How much is a room for rent in Shivajinagar?
A private room in a shared flat is roughly ₹7,500 to ₹20,000 a month. FC Road and Model Colony cost the most. A PG bed near the colleges is often ₹8,000 to ₹14,000, usually with meals. It is the highest-priced locality in this part of Pune.
Is Shivajinagar good for students?
It is one of the best in the city for students at Fergusson, COEP and the central colleges, because you can walk or take a short ride to class. The trade-off is cost and noise. Students at SPPU often prefer the University Road side.
Is Shivajinagar on the metro?
Yes, Metro Line 1 has a Shivajinagar station, with trains toward Swargate and PCMC. Line 3 toward Hinjewadi will also serve Shivajinagar once its later stations open; it has not opened there yet, so do not rely on it.
Shivajinagar or Kothrud for a shared flat?
Shivajinagar is more central and easier without a vehicle, and rents are often ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 higher. Kothrud is greener and more residential. If you want to walk to class or take the metro, choose Shivajinagar.
Are there brokerage fees on Bunkd?
None. Bunkd is free for people looking for a flatmate or a room and for people with a spare room, and charges no brokerage on any match.
