How Far Is Graphic Era From Everything Else?

Dehradun looks small on a map and doesn't behave like it. If you're choosing between campuses, or working out whether you can live near one and study at another, these are the numbers that actually decide it.

From Graphic Era, Clement Town

Graphic Era's main campus is on Bell Road in Clement Town, in the south-west of the city near the ISBT. Times below are realistic door-to-door by scooter or auto in normal traffic — add ten to fifteen minutes in the morning rush and during the monsoon.

The one that matters most: Graphic Era to Doon University

This is the most-searched pair in Dehradun student housing, and the honest answer is that they are on opposite sides of the city. Clement Town is south-west near the ISBT; Doon University is at Kedarpur on the Ajabpur side. Twenty-five to thirty-five minutes on a scooter, longer by auto, and considerably longer at 9am.

Practically: do not live near one and study at the other. People try it every year and stop by the second month. If you have friends split across both, Mothrowala is roughly the midpoint — fifteen to twenty minutes to Graphic Era, twenty to thirty to Doon University — and is the only sensible compromise.

Which belt should you live in?

Dehradun has four separate student rental markets and they do not overlap. Live in the one that serves your own campus.

Clement Town belt

Graphic Era, Graphic Era Hill, Tula's. Bell Road, inner Clement Town, Mothrowala, Majra.

Prem Nagar belt

UPES Bidholi and Kandoli, Uttaranchal University. Prem Nagar, Chandanwari, Chakrata Road.

Kedarpur / Ajabpur belt

Doon University. Kedarpur, Ajabpur Kalan and Khurd, Mothrowala.

Mussoorie Diversion belt

DIT University. Mussoorie Diversion Road, Rajpur Road, Jakhan.

Each has its own page with real rents and micro-areas: Graphic Era, UPES Kandoli, Doon University and DIT.

The same journey at different hours

Map estimates assume an empty road. Dehradun is not an empty road between 8:30 and 10 in the morning, and the Clement Town to city-centre run is the worst of it because everything funnels through the same few junctions.

The practical lesson: a fifteen-minute gap on paper is a forty-minute gap in January at 9am with fog. If you are choosing between two rooms and one is walkable to your gate, that is worth more than the rent difference almost always suggests.

If you are moving to Dehradun for the first time

A few things nobody tells outstation students, and all of them affect where you should live.

Living in one belt, friends in another

This is the situation nobody plans for and half of Dehradun ends up in: you get into Graphic Era, your school friend gets into Doon University or UPES, and you assumed you would share a flat.

You can, but be clear about the cost. One of you commutes across the city twice a day — twenty-five to fifty-five minutes each way depending on the hour and the season. Over an academic year that is somewhere between 150 and 300 hours.

The honest options, in order of how well they actually work:

  1. Live in your own belt, meet at weekends. Dull advice, and the one that everyone eventually lands on.
  2. Both take Mothrowala. Genuine midpoint for Graphic Era and Doon University — fifteen to twenty minutes one way, twenty to thirty the other. Does not help for UPES, which is on the far side.
  3. The one with the earlier timetable lives near their campus. A 9am lab is a very different commute from a 2pm lecture.
  4. Share with people from your own campus instead. Less romantic, and it is why most students end up with flatmates they met after arriving rather than before.

If that last one is where you are heading, finding those people in advance rather than in the first fortnight is worth doing — Squad Mode matches you with students joining the same campus at the same time.
