PG & Rooms Near IISER Pune, Pashan
Updated 30 Sep 2026
IISER Pune is a research institute on Dr Homi Bhabha Road in Pashan, next to the National Chemical Laboratory, and it is the odd one out in this set: most of its students live in campus hostels, and the people who rent nearby are PhD scholars, postdocs, project students and visiting researchers rather than first-years. That changes the market. They want quiet, a desk, a fixed monthly rent, decent internet and a lease that fits a fixed-term fellowship, and they are willing to share a flat rather than take a PG bed. Very little of it is aimed at the ordinary undergraduate.
Who lives here
IISER PhD and integrated PhD students, postdocs, summer research interns, and researchers at neighbouring national labs who share the same Pashan rental belt.
Research institutions nearby. IISER Pune, the National Chemical Laboratory, C-DAC at Pashan, and other research and defence establishments in the Pashan and Panchvati area; SPPU is a little further along University Road.
Where to live, area by area
Rents below are indicative ranges for a private room in a shared flat, before deposit. Confirm the number with the person before you commit to anything.
The closest residential belt, five to fifteen minutes from the gate. Established apartment buildings, shared flats and some independent houses, close to shops and hospitals.
₹10,000 – ₹20,000 / month for a private room
West of the campus, ten to fifteen minutes by two-wheeler. Newer apartments, more variety of budget, and the classic choice for students who want a flat with a balcony.
₹9,000 – ₹18,000 / month for a private room
Fifteen to twenty minutes away. Pricier, busier, and full of cafes, so it suits postdocs and researchers with a higher stipend.
₹12,000 – ₹22,000 / month for a private room
The other side of the hill. Lower rents than Baner, a residential feel, and close to the Chandani Chowk services.
₹9,000 – ₹17,000 / month for a private room
How long it actually takes to get places
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| IISER campus from Pashan | 5–15 min by bike or auto |
| NCL, C-DAC Pashan and nearby labs | 5–15 min |
| Baner and Aundh | 15–30 min; the Pashan–Baner link is slow at peak |
| Pune Univ and Shivajinagar | 25–40 min by road; Line 2 stations reachable from the Vanaz side, check exact stations |
What it actually costs per month in IISER Pune
Rent is the number people compare, and it is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the realistic all-in figure for one person sharing a flat in IISER Pune.
| What you pay | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Room rent (private, shared flat) | ₹9,000 – ₹20,000 |
| Deposit (one-off) | ₹18,000 – ₹40,000 (flats usually 2 months) |
| Maintenance & utilities | ₹1,500 – ₹3,500 |
| Food | ₹5,500 – ₹8,500 if self-catering; campus mess for hostel residents |
| Local transport | ₹800 – ₹2,500 |
| Realistic monthly total | ₹16,000 – ₹32,000 |
The deposit is the part that catches people out — Pune commonly asks two months up front and some landlords ask more. Read the security deposit guide before you hand anything over, and get the refund terms written on the receipt.
Flatmate, roommate or PG — which one do you actually want?
The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing, which matters when you are searching.
- A flatmate shares the flat but has their own room. You split rent and bills, cook or order separately, and keep your own space. This is what most working professionals in IISER Pune mean when they say flatmate.
- A roommate shares the room itself. Cheapest option by a wide margin — often 40 to 50 percent less than a private room — and common among students and first-jobbers who are saving hard.
- A PG gives you a bed with meals and cleaning handled, plus house rules and often a gate timing. Simpler to start, less freedom, and once you split a flat three ways the cost difference usually disappears.
Bunkd covers all three. You set whether you want your own room or are happy sharing one, and the matching works the same way either direction. If a PG is what you are after, the honest PG versus flatshare comparison is worth five minutes before you sign.
When to look
IISER's calendar is different from a typical Pune college. The undergraduate BS-MS batch joins in August, but the demand for off-campus rooms comes from doctoral cohorts that join in August and January, from postdocs who arrive year-round on fellowships, and from summer interns who need one or two months between May and July. That makes short-term and month-to-month arrangements far more common than at other Pune campuses. If you need only two or three months, ask for a shorter lease and avoid a two-month deposit for a two-month stay.
What to check before you pay anything
- Ask whether the landlord will agree to a lease matching your fellowship term. Fixed-term contracts matter more here than anywhere else.
- Check whether internet is included and whether it is fibre. Researchers work from home and video calls are common.
- Confirm registration of the agreement. Maharashtra requires every leave and licence to be registered and it also helps with address proofs for fellowship paperwork.
- Ask about power backup in the flat. Pashan has occasional outages and a lost experiment or analysis run is expensive.
- Look at the route home at night if you work late in the lab. Some Pashan lanes are poorly lit.
Finding the person, not just the room
Most flatshares fail on lifestyle, not on rent. Bunkd asks the things that actually decide whether living together works — sleep schedule, cleanliness, social battery, guest policy, food preference and your one real dealbreaker — and matches on those. You swipe through people, match when it is mutual, and chat inside the app before anyone shares a phone number.
If you have not found a flat yet, Squad Mode lets you match with other people searching in IISER Pune so you can pool budgets and take a 2BHK or 3BHK together. Splitting a bigger flat is almost always cheaper per person than renting a single room alone — the rent split calculator works out a fair division when the rooms are not the same size.

Common questions
Are there PGs near IISER Pune?
A few, but the market here is mostly flats. Because the people renting nearby are research scholars and postdocs, shared flats in Pashan and Sus are more common than operated PGs with fixed meal times.
Do IISER students live on campus?
Most undergraduates do. PhD students may get campus housing subject to availability, and others move to flats nearby. Ask the institute about the current allocation for your cohort.
How much does a room near IISER cost?
A private room in a shared flat is usually ₹9,000 to ₹20,000 a month depending on whether it is Pashan, Sus or Baner. A whole 1BHK is more. For a short stay, negotiate the deposit and confirm what the monthly rent includes.
Can I find a flatmate before I arrive for a PhD or postdoc?
Yes. Squad Mode lets you match with other researchers and students arriving at the same time, so you can rent a flat in Pashan or Sus together before you land.
Is Bunkd free?
Yes. No fee and no brokerage.
