Flatmates & Roommates in Punawale, Pune
Updated 30 Sep 2026
Punawale is the quiet, newer neighbour tucked between Wakad, Tathawade and Ravet. Most of it was farmland a decade ago, and it shows: rows of recent apartment complexes, wide-ish roads, and a shortage of the small conveniences that an older area has. A flat here costs less than the same flat in Wakad, and the buildings are usually younger. In exchange you take a slower start to every errand, because the market, the hospital and the decent restaurants are all a short ride away rather than a short walk.
Who lives here
Salaried people in their twenties and early thirties who want a newer flat at a Wakad discount, and small groups who pool for a two-bedroom rather than pay for a one-bedroom each.
Why people live here. Value for money compared with Wakad, new apartment stock with lifts and parking, and reach to both the Hinjewadi corridor and the industrial belt at Chinchwad and Akurdi. Punawale has few employers of its own, and some larger employers run pickups from the highway.
Where to live, area by area
Rents below are indicative ranges for a private room in a shared flat, before deposit. Confirm the number with the person before you commit to anything.
The older village at the centre. Basic shops, a bus link and older houses; the cheapest rooms in Punawale. Not much to do in the evening, and lanes can be tight for a car.
₹5,500 – ₹9,000 / month for a private room
The society clusters facing the Mumbai–Bengaluru highway. Good access to buses and cabs, larger towers with amenities, and higher rents to match. Traffic noise is constant.
₹8,000 – ₹13,000 / month for a private room
The end that meets Wakad. You get access to Wakad’s markets, cafes and clinics on foot or a short ride, at a modest premium over inner Punawale.
₹7,500 – ₹12,000 / month for a private room
Toward the east, near the boundary with Ravet. Mixed older buildings and a few new projects. Cheaper, less served by public transport, better for those with a vehicle.
₹6,000 – ₹10,500 / month for a private room
How long it actually takes to get places
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Hinjewadi Phase 1 | 25–40 min via Wakad or the highway; the bridge is the bottleneck, and Punawale adds a few extra minutes over Wakad |
| Wakad main market | 10–15 min by auto or two-wheeler |
| Chinchwad / Akurdi | 20–35 min, and the return is slower |
| Pune railway station | 60–85 min, so treat it as a planned trip |
What it actually costs per month in Punawale
Rent is the number people compare, and it is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the realistic all-in figure for one person sharing a flat in Punawale.
| What you pay | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Room rent (private, shared flat) | ₹6,000 – ₹12,000 |
| Deposit (one-off) | ₹12,000 – ₹24,000 |
| Maintenance & utilities | ₹1,200 – ₹2,500 |
| Food | ₹4,500 – ₹7,000 |
| Local transport | ₹1,000 – ₹2,200 |
| Realistic monthly total | ₹12,500 – ₹23,000 |
The deposit is the part that catches people out — Pune commonly asks two months up front and some landlords ask more. Read the security deposit guide before you hand anything over, and get the refund terms written on the receipt.
Flatmate, roommate or PG — which one do you actually want?
The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing, which matters when you are searching.
- A flatmate shares the flat but has their own room. You split rent and bills, cook or order separately, and keep your own space. This is what most working professionals in Punawale mean when they say flatmate.
- A roommate shares the room itself. Cheapest option by a wide margin — often 40 to 50 percent less than a private room — and common among students and first-jobbers who are saving hard.
- A PG gives you a bed with meals and cleaning handled, plus house rules and often a gate timing. Simpler to start, less freedom, and once you split a flat three ways the cost difference usually disappears.
Bunkd covers all three. You set whether you want your own room or are happy sharing one, and the matching works the same way either direction. If a PG is what you are after, the honest PG versus flatshare comparison is worth five minutes before you sign.
When to look
Punawale is a market of investor-owned flats, so vacancies follow the owners’ leasing habits rather than a hiring cycle. Expect the most choice from April to June, when many eleven-month agreements end, and again after Diwali. The hiring seasons in January and June still lift demand, but Punawale is rarely the first place people look, so rooms stay listed a little longer than in Wakad. That gives you room to negotiate.
What to check before you pay anything
- Ask if the flat is in a completed project with an occupancy certificate, or in a building where floors are still being finished around you.
- Test the shops. Some Punawale societies are a fifteen-minute ride from a proper grocery, and you should know that before you sign.
- Check whether the rent is quoted furnished or bare. In new buildings, unfurnished is more common and a missing wardrobe or geyser is your cost.
- Ask about water and maintenance billing. New societies often bill tenants for a sinking fund and clubhouse charges.
- Take the ride to your office at your own start time before committing. Punawale to the Hinjewadi bridge varies more than the map suggests.
Finding the person, not just the room
Most flatshares fail on lifestyle, not on rent. Bunkd asks the things that actually decide whether living together works — sleep schedule, cleanliness, social battery, guest policy, food preference and your one real dealbreaker — and matches on those. You swipe through people, match when it is mutual, and chat inside the app before anyone shares a phone number.
If you have not found a flat yet, Squad Mode lets you match with other people searching in Punawale so you can pool budgets and take a 2BHK or 3BHK together. Splitting a bigger flat is almost always cheaper per person than renting a single room alone — the rent split calculator works out a fair division when the rooms are not the same size.

Common questions
How much is a private room in Punawale?
Roughly ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 a month in a shared flat, depending on the building’s age and how close it is to the highway. Shared bedrooms come in around ₹4,000 to ₹7,000. New-build towers with amenities are at the upper end.
Is Punawale a good choice if I work in Hinjewadi?
It can be, if you have your own vehicle and accept a slightly longer commute than from Wakad. You gain a newer flat for a lower rent. If you depend on buses or shuttles, Wakad or Marunji is easier.
How is public transport in Punawale?
Reasonable along the highway, patchy inside. Autos and app cabs are plentiful near Wakad and the highway, less so inside the newer societies after dark. Expect to depend on a two-wheeler.
Is Punawale safe and family-friendly?
It is mostly residential and quiet, with a large share of families in the newer societies. That can help with safety and hurt with landlords who prefer families to groups of singles. Ask early about tenant policy.
Is there any brokerage when I use Bunkd in Punawale?
None. It is free to sign up, swipe, match and chat, and you agree the rent and deposit directly with the person offering the room.
